Zarauz Basque Festival
The Euskal Jaia was born in 1924 through the initiative of local painter Mauricio Flores Kaperotxipi, who wanted to extend summer by organizing a grand festival on September 9, the feast day of the Virgin of Aránzazu, patron saint of Gipuzkoa. Since then, it has become one of the most genuine events in the Basque calendar: throughout Euskal Astea (from August 27 to September 9), Zarautz hosts folk dance classes, trikitixa and bertsolari competitions, and aurresku and couples dance contests in the Lege Zaharren Enparantza. The main day, September 9, kicks off with a wake-up call at 7 AM and is filled with txistularis, trikitilaris, dulzaineros, and the tuntturros of Ituren parading through the streets, a sung high mass, a pelota match, rural sports, pilgrimages, and the traditional float parade. The streets showcase a true display of zamarras, txapelas, scarves, sashes, and alpargatas: the traditional Basque outfit is the absolute highlight of the day. All street events are free and open to any visitor.
