Castle El Collado

In the early 20th century, a local landowner named Tapia —the same one who founded the well-known Chimbo soap brand— decided to build a small neo-Gothic castle in one of the most privileged corners of Laguardia. He didn't start from scratch: he used the original stones from the old medieval barracks of the 12th century, known as "the King's Barracks." So, in a way, every wall of this hotel carries eight hundred years of history, even though the building itself is "only" a century old. Today, that whim of Tapia is one of the most characterful hotels in all of Rioja Alavesa, located in the heart of the walled town. The first thing that surprises upon arrival is the reception: it occupies what was once a chapel, featuring a 17th-century altarpiece in gold and silver leaf, and an altar that was once an Ara. It's not common to check in under such a ceiling.
